Accessibility/Age-Friendly Grants and Tax Credits

Home Accessibility Tax Credit (HATC)

New for 2016 and subsequent tax years, the Home Accessibility Tax Credit provides a non-refundable tax credit for a renovation or alteration that is of an enduring nature and is integral to the dwelling. The renovation should:

  • Allow the qualifying individual to gain access to, or to be mobile or functional within the dwelling; OR

  • Reduce the risk of harm to the qualifying individual within the dwelling or in gaining access to the dwelling

​​

The HATC applies to the total eligible expenses up to $10 000 per year, resulting in a maximum non-refundable tax credit of $1500 ($10 000 x 15%).

If you have a valid Disability Tax Certificate, are aged 65 or older, or claim certain tax credits for a disabled dependent, your renovation may qualify. Qualifying renovations include:

 

  • Installation of walk-in tubs

  • Wheelchair ramps

  • Grab bars

*as a general rule, if the item you buy will not become a permanent part of your dwelling, it is not eligible
